Black (fired) pottery is a traditional method of firing crockery in a fire oven, known even before the advent of glazed pottery. The black tone of the dishes occurs in the final stage of firing. After approx. 12 hours and reaching 1050 degrees, closing the furnace tightly, creating a smoky environment and saturating the faience with carbon. As a result of this alchemical process, the vessels take on a dark hue that can range from gray-green to silvery-black.
